Job Summary

This position reports directly to Lead Technologist, Laboratory Supervisor and/or Manager. Performs waived, moderate, and high complexity tests in a clinical laboratory for use in the treatment and diagnosis of disease.


Key Responsibilities

  1. General Functions
    1. Follow laboratory procedures for specimen collection, processing, analyzing, and reporting of test results
    2. Interacts courteously and respectfully with physicians, nurses and other healthcare workers
    3. Maintain clean and orderly work areas
    4. Performs, documents, and review quality control activities
    5. Recognizes and takes appropriate action on results that deviate from guidelines
  2. Administrative Skills
    1. Training/Teaching
      • Provides assistance and guidance for students or new employees when needed
      • Completion of required competency and documentation
    2. Regulatory/Accreditation/Quality
      • Assists with investigations as needed
      • Assists in identification of opportunities for improvements in the laboratory (i.e. employee training, process improvement…etc.)
      • Understands and complies with good laboratory practice, regulatory and accreditation requirements
    3. Communication
      • Communicates to physicians, nursing staff, clients, and other hospital personnel timely and clearly, but not limited to the following areas:
        • Documents and communicates critical values to patient’s caregiver
        • Documents and communicates testing delay to physicians and other hospital departments as needed
        • Documents and communicates critical values to patient’s caregiver
  1. Technical Skills
    1. Performs waived, moderate, and/or high complexity analytical process without direct supervision
    2. Determines suitability of specimen for analysis, following established procedures, policies, and guidelines
    3. Operates laboratory instruments and ensures proper functioning of all laboratory instruments and equipment
      • Calibrates laboratory instruments as required by manufacturers’ recommendation
      • Performs routine, preventive and corrective maintenance
      • Performs trouble shooting when instrument malfunction(s) occur
      • Recognizes equipment malfunctions and technical problems
      • Uses scientific principles, takes initial steps to resolve equipment malfunctions
      • Maintains records and documentation of maintenance
    4. Reports test results in an accurate and timely manner
    5. Performs validation/verification studies as directed by Lead technologists/Supervisor/Manager
    6. Supports and performs quality assurance activities as assigned, but not limited to:
      • Lot-to-Lot comparison
      • Method correlation
      • QC range establishment
      • Reviews and evaluates QC data
      • Resolves and documents corrective action taken in response to unacceptable QC data
      • Proficiency testing
    7. Supplies
      1. Maintains adequate inventory of reagents and supplies
    8. Performs other duties as needed


  • Education: Associate degree in chemical, physical or biological science or Medical Laboratory Technology and/or
  • License/Certification: Certification as a Medical Technologist by a nationally recognized board/agency (preferred)
  • Experience: None required beyond education/training requirement.
